We often see mothers experiencing parenthood as a career handbrake. Workplaces assume they can’t, or don’t want to, grow their careers in the same way they once did. For fathers, the opposite expectations can apply. Workplaces assume nothing has changed in terms of their aspirations or the hours they can work.

Leaders can drive positive change by recognising when these gendered assumptions are at play, and taking the time to understand what each parent in their team truly wants, both in terms of career progression and support to balance work and parenting responsibilities.

  • The Importance of Inclusive Support: Research from the National Working Families Report 2024 underscores the need for a more inclusive approach. The report highlights that current workplace policies and practices often support men as primary income earners and women as primary caregivers, which disadvantages both genders.
  • Family-Friendly Champions: Over one-third of male respondents (37%) indicated that having family-friendly leaders would be beneficial.
  • Stress and Tension: Two-thirds (62%) of parents and carers report that work-family demands significantly contribute to stress or tension in their relationships, a percentage that has doubled since 2019.

Join us for this insightful conversation and learn how leaders can support both mothers and fathers, fostering a more inclusive and supportive workplace for everyone.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of working parents.
