Updates on Recycling Guidelines and New Waste Signage
We will soon introduce new waste signage to reflect recent changes in recycling guidelines set by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
The NSW EPA has decided to remove compostable plastics and fiber-based materials from Organics (food waste) recycling. This decision was made due to the following concerns:
- Some compostable packaging contains PFAS chemicals, which pose environmental risks.
- These materials provide minimal nutritional value to the composting process.
- Research suggests that an increase in compostable plastic content in compost could negatively impact its safe use on land, potentially harming earthworm and plant growth.
New signage and educational materials will be available in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please continue following your current waste disposal practices.
Thank you for your attention to this important update.
